Photomobile are really pleased to announce we’ll be working with 42nd Street, a Manchester-based charity that provides support services to young people under stress, on their HLF project A Different Spirit.
We’ll be working with a group of young people on a series of Photo-Walks around the Ancoats area, where 42nd Street are based.
Here’s how they describe the project as whole (there will be others strands, which include art, craft and a residential visit):
A Different Spirit – a series of projects being developed by 42nd Street, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, celebrating the history of Ancoats in creative ways and with an aim to contribute to the positive health and wellbeing of the people in the area.
The Ancoats Art Museum, created by Thomas Horsfall in the late 1800s was one of a number of Victorian experiments seeking to bring art to the people and so better the lives of the working classes. A disciple of Ruskin, Horsfall strived to “alleviate the miserable dullness and emptiness of the life lived by a very large proportion of the inhabitants of Manchester.”
Our project celebrates and re-presents the mission and principles sitting behind the Ancoats experiment. “A Different Spirit” is creating a greater sense of place for young people by taking a thread from the past and making it an exciting part of Ancoats present and future.
